The city of Ripon dates from around the 7th century, gradually growing around it's main attraction, The Cathedral Church of St. Peter and St. Wilfrid. The current cathedral is the fourth such building to have stood on this site, a place of worship for over 1300 years. During this time, the surrounding city has evolved into a place full of history, beauty and charm. Home to many historic buildings, several excellent and informative museums, a canal boat marina and "Yorkshire's Garden Racecourse", you're sure to find something to enjoy during your time here.
The city is also home to many ancient and traditional customs, the most well known being "the setting of the watch", a ceremony with an unbroken thousand year history that takes place every night at 9pm on the Market Place and culminates with the blowing of the horn at the square's four corners.
Furthermore, the surrounding Yorkshire countryside offers a host of interesting days out and beautiful walks. Within a few miles you will find The Yorkshire Dales, Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, Newby Hall, Norton Conyers, Markenfield Hall and Lightwater Valley Theme Park.
The old streets of Ripon, often know as the 'gates' are full of individual shops and restaurants. Larger shops surround the market place, where a market is held every Thursday.
